Cretacolor’s charcoal pencils open up a wide variety of techniques: thin and thick lines; dots and “calligraphic” or “raw” strokes; light and dark tones and much more. Once the charcoal has been deposited on the paper, it can be processed with fingers, drawing stubs, erasers, water, etc. for a wide range of different expressions. The soft variant is darker and more pronounced, the hard is lighter and binds a little more to the paper.
How are they sharpened?
Because the charcoal in Cretacolor’s charcoal pencils is soft and porous, they can be difficult to sharpen in a pencil sharpener without the tip breaking. By using a sharp hobby knife or scalpel and small and careful cuts, the best result is often achieved. By exposing a long tip, the pencil can be laid on its side and draw broad strokes and quickly cover large areas with tone. If you have a “heavy hand” or want to work a little more wildly and energetically, the pencils can be given a shorter, stronger point.
